6-Step Skincare Routine: Summer Edition

Going au naturel – no foundation or face makeup here, just filled in my non-existent brows

Summertime calls for a change not only in your wardrobe, but also skincare routine.  It’s natural for your skin to produce more oil in the summer in response to hotter and more humid climate.  I definitely noticed that my normally super-dry skin becomes oilier, especially in the T-zone in the summer.

I posted about my 6-step skincare routine in this past post.  Today, I’m sharing an updated version of my 6-step routine addressing common summer skincare concerns and incorporating some new products that have hit the market.  The common thread of products that I use in the summer is that they’re lightweight yet still hydrating.  Now, let’s begin…

Products I’ve been using this summer

Step 1: Makeup Removal

Eau Fraîche Douceur

I was using an oil-based makeup remover before but switched to a lighter cleansing water for the summer.  I’ve been using Lancome’s Eau Fraiche Douceur cleansing water and found it quite effective.  It leaves your skin feeling refreshed and supple, and did I mention that cleansing water is trending right now?

Step 2: Face wash

I’ve been using  a Japanese gel cleanser called  Santa Marche Green Tea Deep Cleansing Gel.  Note that gel cleansers don’t foam, but don’t let that fool you because the cleansing power is just as effective.  After working in the beauty industry, I realized that foaming is pretty much a marketing gimmick.  The texture of the gel is light (picture of the texture shown above) and the green tea extract moisturizes the skin while deep-cleanse the pores.  The cleanser is oil-free, paraben free, and petroleum surfactant free.  A  more well-known brand that carries gel cleanser is Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser.

Step 3: Toner

Think I’m on a roll with these gel products because of how light they feel.  Because my face is producing more natural oil in the summer, the last thing I want on my face is something that feels heavy. The Lancome Energie de Vie Daily Aqua-Gel is an innovative formula where toner is condensed in the form of a gel (picture of texture shown above).  It has a cooling gel sensation and leaves skin feeling soothed, hydrated, and refreshed.  FYI – this is a Sephora exclusive and has been chosen as one of customers’ top picks in skincare.

Step 4: Essence

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

In my previous post of skincare routine, I used a serum after toner.  However, in the summer, I substituted serum with essence and skipped serum all together.  Serum has a thicker consistency than essence and I break out when I use serum in the summer.  So what the heck is an essence you ask?  It’s a “lighter version” of serum with watery consistency and its purpose is to increase cellular turnover.  I started using the coveted SK-II Facial Treatment Essence and it’s a holy grail item for a reason.  I noticed a brighter complexion after a week of using it.  It’s a splurge so I’m savoring every drop of it.  Friends and other beauty bloggers have pointed out the Missha Time Revolution First Treatment Essence as a more affordable option.

Step 5: Eye essence

Innisfree Eco Science Wrinkle Spot Essence, 1.44 Ounce

I’m going lighter with all my skincare products including eye cream.  This Innisfree Eco Science Wrinkle Spot Essence actually has the consistency of an eye cream but feels less heavy.  This essence can also be applied to areas around the mouth to reduce or prevent the appearance of “smile lines”.  Kill two birds with one stone – why not?

Step 6: Moisturizer (Daytime)

ProEVEN

I’ve been noticing some dark spots popping up on my face which can be worsened by sun exposure in the summer, so I’m using Vichy’s Pro Even Daily Dark Spot Corrector as my daytime moisturizer.  This is one of Vichy’s top sellers.  It contains Vitamin C which brightens complexion and corrects the look of dark spots.  It’s also a light texture that absorbs quickly, so I love this texture against my face.

Step 6: Cream (nighttime)

[NATURE REPUBLIC]GINSENG ROYAL SILK WATERY CREAM 60g(2.11oz)whitening&wrinkle improvement     FullSizeRender

I’m using the Nature Republic Ginseng Royal Silk Watery Cream at night.  It has a lighter consistency than a normal face cream.  This cream brightens and reduces the look of wrinkles.  Its main ingredient, ginseng, is a holy grail for beauty products in Asia because it has antioxidants that combat look of fatigued skin.  The cream also contains gold speckles – gold can detoxify and brighten.  Some people like these speckles and some find them weird, I personally think they’re nifty.

Also want to introduce two FANTASTIC new skincare products I’ve been using this summer…

Sunscreen

When it comes to sunscreen, Japanese beauty brands, such as Kanebo, are experts.  People in Asia bend over backward for sun protection because they believe porcelain skin is a sign of wealth and beauty.  Anyway, I’ve been using Kanebo’s ALLIE Sunscreen (SPF50+ PA+++) and I’m obsessed!!  My usual goto is La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid, which is often praised as the #1 sunscreen.  I love my La Roche-Posay, but the ALLIE sunscreen may just go on a wee bit smoother.  Both sunscreens are perfect for the face because they’re not thick nor sticky unlike many sunscreens.  ALLIE is also one of the top selling sunscreens in Asia.

Rinse-off Masque

I talked about my love for rinse-off masks in this post.  Kiehl’s launched this new Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque earlier this year.  Turmeric is trending hardcore right now and it has anti-inflammatory properties.  The cranberry seeds in the masque can be used to gently exfoliate the skin (texture of masque shown above).  The masque has a cooling sensation and herbal smell.  I noticed that my complexion  brightened immediately after the mask is washed off.  A downside is that if you leave it on for too long, the seeds dry and becomes really difficult to wash off, so don’t leave it on for more than 7 minutes.

Althought this post is lengthier than my usual ones, I enjoyed writing it very much because I LOVE recommending great products.  What are your favorite summer skincare products?  Share in the comment section below!
